Based on a review of a number of documents, as well as comparing likely family members to the various census records, we have come up a hypothesis with regard to the ancestry of Elisha Wilcox who wrote the letter. [Refer to the revised family tree below.]  While Clarissa Wilcox is believed to have been the daughter of Amos Wilcox, it is believed that Elisha's mother descended from Thomas Wilcox of Minsisink.  A possible explanation is that just as Elisha mentioned he had an Uncle Samuel Wilcox on his mother's side (but he didn't say his mother had a brother named Samuel) it is possible that Elisha's mother had referred to Clarissa (Wilcox) Moore as his aunt with the same meaning regarding kinship.  Also, after moving to Ohio in 1810, Polly would not have likely had contact with any of her female relatives other than Clarissa after her sister, Sally, died about 1812.  Note that Polly, as well as her sister, Sally, both named a son, Thomas, possibly after their father, as well as both named a son, Elisha, likely after their brother.

The family tree below has been prepared using the statments made in Elisha Wilcox's family letter.
